Live Radio Interview of Dr. Maryam Shaygan on the Connection Between Spiritual Intelligence and Adolescent Mental Health

Dr. Maryam Shaygan, a faculty member at the School of Nursing and Midwifery and the Director of the Community-Based Psychiatric Care Research Center, appeared on the live radio program "Saye-ban-e Mehr," discussing the connection between spiritual intelligence and adolescent mental health.

According to the public relations department of the school, Dr. Shaygan explained that the World Health Organization defines health in terms of three dimensions: biological, psychological, and social, and recently, a fourth dimension, spiritual, has been added. She emphasized that a healthy person is one who is not only physically healthy but also mentally, socially, and spiritually well. Dr. Shaygan also mentioned that hundreds of studies from various countries confirm the connection between spiritual intelligence and factors such as self-esteem, happiness, life satisfaction, hopefulness, quality of life, reduced depression, substance abuse, and risky behaviors in adolescents. However, in many countries, the physical aspect of health is prioritized, while other dimensions of health are often overlooked. She pointed out that nearly 85% of the factors affecting health are psychological, social, and spiritual, rather than physical or genetic.

She further stated that spiritual intelligence exists inherently in all individuals, but it is crucial to strengthen it, especially through parental involvement. Dr. Shaygan emphasized the importance of nurturing spiritual intelligence in children and adolescents, advising parents to demonstrate through actions that remembrance of God brings peace and to instill the joy of doing good deeds. She explained that children are highly observant of their parents' behavior in various situations and learn indirectly from them, making family responses to spiritual matters have a profound impact, either fostering or hindering spiritual development.

Finally, Dr. Shaygan stressed the importance of teaching children and adolescents about thinking and reflecting on God and religion, particularly toward the end of childhood and early adolescence. She also highlighted the need to establish the understanding that spirituality primarily contributes to an individual's mental peace.
